NEED TO REPORT SOMEONE LOST OR MISSING? CALL 111 AND ASK FOR POLICE

Governance or Committee Volunteer

While it may be an advantage for some volunteers in a governance role to have experience of search and rescue, not everyone needs to know the difference between a sound line and a sound/light sweep, or the difference between Italian or clove hitches.

Volunteers with experience in management, accounts, fundraising and volunteer organisation are invaluable to ensure our groups are efficiently and appropriately run. People who are innovative or creative can provide a different opinion or an alternative way of doing things, especially when it comes to fundraising.

But above all else, governance volunteers should know what motivates our people and provide leadership that creates a positive environment that is the foundation for a successful and operational search and rescue capability.

Roles as a governance or committee volunteer include chairperson, secretary, treasurer and group training officer. Some groups may have other roles too.

Commitment & Training

Governance or committee volunteer commitment may vary from group to group, but most groups hold committee meetings once every other month, and an annual general meeting, once year, as implied in the title.

In addition to the meetings, volunteers may be required to develop or file reports or complete administrative work.

Training and support for governance roles is available through group support officers.

LandSAR Team Members

Role Description

Our groups cannot function without leadership. As with all organisations, each group requires strategic direction and routine management and governance.

All groups are led by a committee. The committee members are volunteers but do not necessarily require search and rescue experience, although this may be a requirement for some groups.
