NEED TO REPORT SOMEONE LOST OR MISSING? CALL 111 AND ASK FOR POLICE

WanderWell Volunteers

WanderWell is a system that provides information and equipment to people at risk of going missing or getting lost due to dementia, neurodivergence or disabilities, and their whānau or caregivers.

WanderWell volunteers are non-operational but provide an important service that supports Land Search and Rescues aims.  Volunteers must be trustworthy, accurate and flexible.

There are two volunteer roles that support WanderWell:

  1. WanderWell phone volunteers provide information on ways people can be safer who are living with this risk, such as information on Safer Walking and WanderSearch devices. After providing initial information, volunteers can collect information from a person who wants a device and enters it accordingly. Phone volunteers will be empathetic and personable, with an ability to relate to cognitively diverse people, and caregiver stressors. Phone and computer skills are essential, and volunteers must have access to a phone and computer to support this role. Being able to accurately enter data and have a good eye for detail is crucial.
  2. WanderWell regional volunteers receive a request for a new or replacement device and activate and issue the equipment accordingly. Regional volunteers must have a phone, valid New Zealand full driving licence and own transport to be able to deliver the equipment to where needed. Mileage will be reimbursed. This role requires accuracy, flexibility and the ability to follow instructions to support those in need.

Commitment & Training

WanderWell volunteers are placed in a position of trust and are expected to undertake Police vetting for the role. Commitment to  Land Search and Rescue’s Volunteer Agreement is imperative. All volunteers will be inducted and training will be offered on a periodic basis.

WanderWell volunteers are non-operational, however may be able to join their local group to also do an operational role such as others listed in the volunteer page here. Volunteers are of course welcome to do a combination of the above WanderWell roles

Both WanderWell roles are within day and early evening hours, with no overnight requirements.  Volunteers will be rostered to availability and demand. Phone volunteers could be supporting people from across the country, but regional volunteers will be assigned tasks on an agreed geographical area.

Unlike operational roles there is no fitness assessment, however, volunteers must be able to undertake tasks safely.

EMPLOYER INFORMATION

Make sure you discuss joining SAR with your employer before signing up. Some work places allow special leave for SAR operations, others may require you to use your own leave. Discuss the process for notifying your boss when you are called out on a search.
