Tourists 'not aware' of safety in backcountry

Backcountry safety was not being taken seriously by central government and could hurt tourism, according to Land Search and Rescue.
LandSAR spokesperson Phil Melchior, of Wanaka, said the Tourism Ministry had put backcountry safety education in the too-hard-basket, fearing it could scare away tourists.
The organisation met Tourism Minister Damien O'Connor in April to discuss ways to promote safety, including in-flight messages.
"We got a lot of nice noises from the minister but when it came to following through it went very quickly into the too-hard-basket," he said.

Wanderer’s Account For 9% Of Lost People In NZ

Dementia Wanderer’s Account For 9% Of Lost People In NZ
There are 40,746. people with dementia in New Zealand, with an estimated 12,333 new cases per year and that figure is predicted to grow to 74,821 by the year 2026.[1]
There is an average of 714 land SAR incidents per year in which 732 people require emergency service organisations to mount search and rescue operations. People with Dementia/Alzheimer’s account for approximately 9% of all missing subjects. This figure can reasonably be expected to increase as the population ages. In recent years, the high profile media coverage of fatal cases has further highlighted the incidence of wandering.

New pendants to help those with Alzheimer's

Lorraine Joyes' family used to worry one day the police would call to say the elderly woman was missing. A simple device means they no longer have that fear. The 84-year-old, who suffers from vascular dementia, was prone to wandering off from the Mitchell Downs Home and Hospital where she now lives. The problem got so bad, her family faced having to put her in a more secure facility. But the Rotorua police Search and Rescue squad have a new tool that makes it easy - and quick - to find someone who has gone missing. Squad leader detective sergeant John Wilson said Mrs Joyes and five others in Rotorua would be given new tracking devices, similar to those used to track kiwi.
